Theodore Gericault

This is a drawing by Theodore Gericault and it is called The Black Standard Bearer. The man in the picture was drawn from exemplary acts of courage during the Napoleonic Wars. The drawing was made with pencil, black chalk, and gray wash heightened with white on buff wove paper. I thought the drawing was interesting because of the contrast, a black soldier holding a white flag over a white horse. Also the foreground is completely developed while the background is hazy and undefined
